Guangrong Elementary School Introduction
Guangrong Elementary School, established in 1949, is a small school located in the west of Kaohsiung, next to the Yancheng district office and LoveRiver. The school buildings were reconstructed during 2004-2006, arranged in an L-shape on the campus. The school grounds measure about 1.5 hectares. In the school, there are twelve ordinary classrooms, four subject classrooms, a library, a student activity center, an audio-visual room, a teachersˇ¦ office, a computer room, the playground, the basketball court and a health center.
Guangrong Elementary School stands in a lively area where lots of people used to live here but now the community is not so bustling. The school is best known for its sailboat class, the drum dancing troupes and bridge games club. Currently, we have about 300 students and a faculty of 32, with 10 regular classes, 2 sailboat classes, one class in kindergarten and one special education class. Around 60 % of the teachers hold MA degrees, and the rest hold BA degrees. All of the teachers are qualified, professional and responsible, focusing on studentsˇ¦ needs and health.
About 80% of the students come from middle class families. We also have about 20 students whose parent or parents are from abroad. Approximately 15 % of our students are from single-parent families. Most of our parents are white-collar class, such as businessmen, managers and civil servants. The parents are very active at school, volunteering for traffic patrol, caring for the campus and gardening, and serving as assistant librarians. Some of the parent-volunteers also help us with remedial teaching and students counseling.
Apartfrom the learning in the regulated curriculum, the faculty in Guangrong Elementary School organizes many extracurricular activities, such as the after-school club, including Magic club, In-line skating club, Science club, Tae Kwon Do club, bridge game club and so on. On an annual base, we celebrate the schoolˇ¦s anniversary in December on the Sports Day, in which we arrange a lot of sports activities for students and parents, such as Challenge to Guang Rong Record. It is similar to a school fair in the States. On that day, we also provide vendorˇ¦s stalls where students and parents are allowed to sell foods and play games. Moreover, the 6th graders always take a three-day trip to the north of Taiwan before they graduate. The graduation ceremony is held in every June. And right before the ceremony, the graduates take one last walk in the campus to receive the blessing from lower classmates. The ceremony shows that teachers and students in Guangrong Elementary School are quite intimate and the school environment is rather friendly.
